FIRE AND ICE

Finally, let’s take it on the chin. With the help of modern science, we can now resolve Frost’s uncertainty about the fate of the world.

We know the world will end in fire,
the universe in ice.
The sun will sap its fissile pyre
and put an end to us in fire.
The cosmos pays a different price;
the galaxies will dissipate
and, cooling, spread to their demise;
an empty state
as cold as ice.

FIRE AND ICE

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Robert Frost
